H.E Em Chan Makara Advocates for the Creation and Printing of Accessible Documents for People with Disabilities

Phnom Penh: Representative of H.E Chea Somethy, Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, and H.E Em Chan Makara, Secretary of State and Secretary-General of the Disability Action Council, have urged for the creation and dissemination of easily accessible documents or information for people with disabilities.

H.E Em Chan Makara emphasized this during the inauguration of the validation workshop for the research titled “Validation needs assessment for people with disabilities in Cambodia” held on December 11, 2023, at the Raffles Hotel in Phnom Penh. He also advocated for the expansion of broadcasting stations and media coverage areas operated by individuals with disabilities.

The Secretary of State, H.E Em Chan Makara, highlighted that ensuring access to comprehensive information opens new opportunities to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities. This involves access to information related to the economy, education, training, health services, and other public domains, encompassing social and cultural information and the environment. He stressed the crucial need for people with disabilities to seek the latest information through user-friendly programs developed by and for individuals with disabilities.

During the event, H.E Em Chan Makara urged relevant units to enhance the use of sign language, subtitles, Braille alphabet, and larger letters to facilitate communication, expression of opinions, and access to information for people with disabilities.

Simultaneously, H.E Em Chan Makara underscored the significance of establishing diverse programs, platforms, and communication aids—embracing speech, reading, listening, and viewing—that cater to the varied needs of all individuals with disabilities. He called upon relevant units to collaborate in addressing the specific information needs of different types of disabilities, ensuring reliable, clear, and easily understandable translations in a timely manner.
