Phnom Penh, November 14, 2023 – In a seminar addressing the promotion of women’s leadership and the art of effective communication, H.E. Nhep Sopheap, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, underscored the ongoing commitment to advancing gender equality and empowering women in Cambodia.

H.E. Nhep Sopheap emphasized the crucial role of promoting women leaders, particularly in public and political spheres, as well as creating increased opportunities for women. Recognizing these efforts as vital for sustainable socio-economic development, she highlighted the significance of the workshop in contributing to the capacity building of women.

Organized by the Ministry of Social Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and with technical and financial support from the Cambodian Children’s Fund, the workshop aims to raise awareness, alter public attitudes, and enhance the knowledge of women leaders in decision-making. It also focuses on promoting gender equality and empowering women through capacity building.

H.E. Nhep Sopheap emphasized the coherence of these efforts with the political agenda of the 7th legislature of the National Assembly. The Royal Government of Cambodia has placed a high priority on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, initiating the first phase of the Pentagon Strategy to fortify citizenship in a society marked by principles of morality, equity, and inclusivity. This encompasses augmenting the representation and capabilities of women in leadership positions on both the national and sub-national fronts.

In addition, she proposed ongoing efforts to promote gender equity and women’s empowerment in the economy. This involves supporting training, technical skill development, and creating opportunities for women to expand their careers, increase income, and venture into entrepreneurship. The Secretary of State also highlighted the importance of enhancing learning opportunities for women and girls, especially in high school and higher education.

H.E. Nhep Sopheap expressed optimism that the workshop would equip participants with knowledge, experiences, and effective solutions to integrate gender considerations into policy formulation and implementation. She encouraged attendees to continue strengthening their capacity, efficiency, and values in self-leadership, fostering teamwork, and creating a positive working environment.

The Secretary of State concluded by expressing expectations that participants would use the knowledge gained to contribute effectively to their respective units and continue seeking opportunities for personal and professional development in alignment with the nation’s evolving values and goals.
